Morgan Hughes

Hello, I’m Morgan Hughes.  As a mom, an Iowan, and a patriot, I am honored to be your candidate for the Waukee school board.

 

My message is simple: When elected, I’ll advocate tirelessly on behalf of students, parents, teachers, and taxpayers. I’ll be transparent, accountable, and available.

 

I have been a resident within the Waukee School District since 2012.  I was raised in Louisiana and received a Bachelors Degree in Computer Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis from the University of Arkansas.  My professional career led me to become an IT consultant, working with various State and City agencies in New York.  Ultimately, I was assigned to a contract for the Iowa Department of Revenue in 2009, and decided to leave New York and make Iowa my home.  I now work in the financial services industry as a Project Delivery Manager for a Fortune 100 company. 

 

My husband, Mike, and I have navigated three children through the Waukee schools.  Two have graduated from Waukee High School, and one is starting 3rd grade this school year.  In 2017, I initiated my organization's consulting partnership with the Waukee APEX program for the Information Technology and Financial sectors.  In 2019, I received the Waukee APEX Catalyst Award after being nominated by one of the students participating in the program.  Programs like these truly make our district unique and give our students experiences and opportunities that are unheard of in many other areas.  Additionally, I have been involved with our school's PTO since 2018, working with parents, teachers, and staff to create unique and thoughtful yearbooks.

 

As a professional, I hold myself to high standards of accountability, transparency and constant communication with all stakeholders who depend on me. Once elected to the board, I will exhibit these same values for our students, parents, teachers, administrators, and residents of the Waukee Community School District.  I will take the stance that parents, not the government, should be in the driver’s seat when it comes to our children's education.  I do not believe that one size fits all.  I do not believe that ANY politics should be promoted by our curriculum and our educators.  I believe in promoting parental responsibility and accountability to keep children safe in our schools.  I believe that our teachers and staff should respond without bias when our children ask thoughtful questions about current events.  I believe in our children being taught with an emphasis on logic as opposed to emotion.  I believe in our children being taught with high standards, to have great expectations of themselves, to display personal responsibility, and to be respectful citizens.

 

As you see me out and about, please don’t hesitate to talk to me about your own concerns for our district.  It has been said before by our current administration that we need intentionality in connecting with families and staff to better understand our district’s needs in order to be healthy and successful.  It’s my intent to hold up to that notion.

 

I am excited to get to work uniting our community and ensuring every Waukee student has the access, opportunity and tools they need to reach their fullest potential.  I appreciate your vote!
